“The most powerful ties are the ones to the people who gave us birth… it hardly seems to matter how many years have passed, how many betrayals there may have been, how much misery in the family; we remain connected, even against our wills.” — Anthony Brandt

So far we’ve talked about getting to the root of intergenerational trauma.

Now, let’s walk through an exercise from the book It Didn’t Start With You to help us empathize with where those previous generations were coming from.

First, take all the intel you’ve been able to dig up about what your parents and grandparents went through. Write it out, talk it out, and think about what that must have been like.

Second, take a stroll down visualization lane.

Imagine the parent or grandparent in your mind’s eye.

Imagine them close to you, now imagine them further away surrounded by their traumas. Try to feel and imagine what that was like for them, and how you would handle any of it.

This simple exercise is the key to beginning to accept them for who they are, and to empathize with what they’ve gone through. When you begin to notice the sensations — fear, anger, sadness — in your own mind and body, you’re on the right path.

Tomorrow, we’ll explore the “Core Language Approach” which can help us practice verbalizing and fixing traumas and our weaknesses.
