Glial cells are being looked at as the possible key to learning and memory. 🧠

Glial cells are the most abundant type of cell in the central nervous system and provide support to neurons. Researchers looked at one specific type of glial cell, the astrocytes, and found that when those cells overproduce a certain protein, it can have a negative effect on memory and recall. It is this type of memory loss that’s common in Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and multiple sclerosis. Contrastly, decreasing the same protein led to an increase in memory.

More research is needed to find out exactly what this all means in the long run, but to learn more about what we know now, check here.

IPOs are becoming rarer every year, and part of the reason may be the desire to keep company information more private.

When trading publically, corporations are required to disclose much of their financial and other sensitive information — which is expensive and requires many lawyers and accountants to file all the necessary paperwork. But staying private has its downfalls as well, including less protection for investors and the possibility of deterioration of price discovery, which is important on the public market.

Learn more about what’s behind the decline of the IPO here.

Wisdom

Sometimes life throws you into situations that you never expected. For Anand Sanwal, he was thrust from helping run a tech company in New York to taking over his father’s chemical manufacturing company in India. Sanwal knew nothing about chemicals — or India, really — but, nonetheless, the responsibility of running Atlas rested squarely on his shoulders.

In a new essay, Sanwal details how managing a company in an industry you don’t know boils down to a few basic ideas: growing a company happens when you sell more of what you’ve already got, or create more different products to diversify. You also need to be efficient and cost-sensitive.

With those principles as his guidepost, Sanwal was able to do the hard work of growing Atlas with cold calls and a solid team working around him until, eventually, buyers became interested in acquiring the company, which he sold just this month.

Projected augmented reality is becoming a got-to tool for brands and artists alike as designers are beginning to use projection mapping in new and creative ways.

Once a complicated process, new software from SF startup Lightform is making the process of projection mapping even easier, and they recently partnered with artist Gemma O’Brien and experimental designer Craig Winslow to create a projected AR mural for Lightform HQ.

Utilizing the easy-to-use lightform software, which runs through any normal projector to give a pixel-by-pixel view of a scene, they were able to create an AR mural that comes to life and can constantly change and evolve with just a few clicks.

Find out more about Lightform and the many uses of their projected AR software here.

Pandora is making a play to grow its stake in the audio market by going the extra mile at the Cannes Lions festival.

“At this year’s festival, Pandora is unveiling a 45-minute showcase where guests will be blindfolded at points to showcase how audio can drive or influence campaigns. Called ‘The Six Dimensions of Sound,’ the experience walks attendees through different sensory experiences such as augmenting taste by listening to particular sounds while eating chocolate.”

Pandora bills itself as the largest publisher of digital audio and wants to form new brand associations that will transcend audio and take Pandora’s product across new and different media.

All the details on Pandora’s plan here.

Education Trends

Could college majors become a thing of the past? Maybe.

Some in the education community have been rethinking how to approach higher learning, and the rigid pathways that major areas of study call for are receiving the brunt of the criticism. Instead, folk like Jeff Selingo, the editor at large for the Chronicle of Higher Education, argue that having a more interdisciplinary approach relevant to the work students are interested in pursuing is the more effective way to go. Selingo believes that students should not have to choose which area of study they are going to pursue until they have relevant, real-world experience to aid in their decision making.

“It doesn’t make sense that many students progress through four years, taught by faculty who’ve never had any employer besides a higher education institution. It doesn’t make any sense that the only option for upskilling millions of workers who are increasingly out of position in the labor market is the inside of a college classroom that has little apparent connection to the work they hope to attain.”
